Back to School Projects

When the Tsunami hit India there was much devastation.  Roy and Ponna and their students from SEMI identified the urgent need for children to be helped back into education.  Through the kindness of people such as yourselves we were able to raise enough money to send 160 children back to school in 2005. Click here for the details of this very successful appeal. The wonderful thing is that not only have we helped the children and parents by this act of Christian love, but it has meant that people in non-Christian areas have seen the love of God at work and have responded positively to this.

Since then Roy and Ponna and their friends at SEMI have continued to help many children return to school. But also our partners Francis and Alison of Tender Heart are doing similar work amongst the downtrodden Dalit (untouchable) people in Goa. Together these two partners have helped many hundreds of children into education.

Village Missionary Movement - Village Bible Schools

VMM works in India, reaching out to rural villages with the love of God. Two of their important aims are to lead rural children to Jesus Christ and to help children achieve their potential by assistance with education.

A key activity is when teams go out into villages during school holidays and run Village Bible Schools. These have proven to be wonderfully popular and have opened many doors to having  good reactions from parents and village leaders.

Just £20 enables a week long school to be undertaken! AMEN sponsored 40 villages this year - enabling around 2000 children to hear the Gospel - most for the first time

Ministry to High School Students in Tondo - Philippines

Pastor Joe Gonzales ministers in one of the worst slum areas in the world - Tondo, a district of Manilla in Philippines. Joe brings the Gospel to the Junior and particularly the High School Children in this area.

Through the organisation SIKATT which he directs and together with a number of volunteers, over recent years his ministry has reached thousands of students, their teachers, and their parents.

Please visit his site and read the amazing story of his ministry and the latest news - you will be amazed

Ministry In N. Karnataka

Brother Joy and his wife Ammini completed their training in SEMI and  have now moved to the Northern parts of Karnataka in India. He has got a great burden for these people where they found no church or missionary in large area.

So he got an idea while praying to reach out to these people by showing love to the local poor children. He collected street child beggars, invited them to his tiny rented house, and treated them as his own children. Now there are 12 of them with him.

Through this many people have now responded by accepting Jesus as their Saviour while seeing the great love of God flow on them.

Please pray that these children will be safe and touched by the love they are experiencing. We pray that they will find Jesus as their Saviour and that one day they become the missionaries in India. At present SEMI is helping them financially in a small way. Please pray for more of God’s provision for these children.

Tender Heart - Day Care Centre

Francis and Alison of Tender Heart have opened a Day Centre for pre-school Dalit children in Margoa. The children have a basic education which brings them to a standard sufficient to enable them to join the state school system.

Without this opportunity many of these children would become beggars and have no real hope of getting proper employment. Francis and Alison plan to open more centres of this type as funds permit.

In the picture Alison can be seen on the right hand side holding her new baby, Abigai!

HOPE - Children's Clubs

Francis and Alison work with the Dalit people in India. These people are often referred to as the "Untouchables" and are at the very bottom of the social ladder. In fact they are under the ladder, often trodden down and abused and disadvantaged.

When Francis and Aalison asked the adults in Dalit communities how they could help, their answer was always the same. They wanted them to help their children have opportunities so that they do not have to experience the lives which their parents have experienced – mainly through education.

So Francis and Alison have started Children’s Clubs in Dalit communities to give the children HOPE and to see their lives change

There are now 5 Children’s Clubs operating. At these clubs ….

  • They teach the children how to play

  • They teach the children English and help children who are at school with their homework

  • They tell them stories from the Bible

  • They give them refreshments and encouragement …

Not only does this help the children in their start of life, but many of these children and their parents experience the love of God for the first time and respond by making a decision to follow Jesus.
