How you can help

The Daya Vihar Orphanage in Mumbai

Mumbai (Bombay) is the largest city in India, with a population of more than 14 million. Many families live in appalling slum conditions with no hope of changing their situation.

It is estimated that there are over 100,000 orphans or displaced children on the streets of this city – without any help these children face a life of begging, prostitution, and are likely to succumb at an early age to illness and disease.

John and Asha Chacko began working with these children six years ago - providing them with food and a basic education. The first children who joined them were a young girl called Bastine and her two brothers who were having a horrific time. John and Asha  felt that God was directing them to provide a more permanent home for many more children and the vision for the Daya Vihar orphanage (means House of Compassion and Kindness) was born.

The orphanage started two years ago in a rented apartment. Gradually the number of children rose to 20 and then 25. John and Asha shared their vision to meet the needs of 100 children and for this they clearly needed a permanent base.

AMEN supporters kindly donated over £35,000 to enable land to be purchased and the first stage of the orphanage erected - the actual building construction took only 2 weeks! It was dedicated at a recent visit of Gareth and Malou. The next stage is to make sure that the orphanage has sufficient funds to operate and to give the children a proper education. At the same time we would like to help with the next stage of the building so that the number of children helped can grow to 100. Click here for the latest news of the progress of the children
